Did You Hear the One About….

You hear these words and you get ready to laugh, don’t you?  Well did you hear the one about the evolutionist, the abortionist, and the gay activist?

Now what could be funny about these?  Wouldn’t making a joke about such be not just tasteless but blasphemous to those of us who see how offensive they are to God and how destructive they are to men?  Yet laugh at these is precisely what God Almighty does.

Luther writes of this in his Commentary on the first twenty-two Psalms.  He says that in Psalm 2 we’re told “He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision.”  The “them” the Lord laughs derisively at are those who plot and scheme against the Lord and His Christ.  Luther says “that the confidence of the afflicted may be the more firm, he emphatically saith, ‘shall laugh at them’ and ‘shall have them in the derision’” (67).

This is Luther’s picture with painted with today’s colors.  Although things like evolution, abortion, and gay marriage “appear to all human sense to be the most firmly established,” the truth of the matter is that the Lord does not deign to resist them as if they were some great and serious matter.  No to Him all their plotting and planning, all their marching, chanting, and sign-holding proclaiming with drop-dead seriousness that science must rule, women’s rights must rule, and love must rule is regarded by Him as “a trifling matter and a thing of naught”(Ibid.)  So God in heaven just laughs at them.

If you’re a parent, you’ve done this with a young child who was mad at you.  He was going to teach you a thing or too.  He was going to make you regret disciplining him or being unfair to him.  He’d show you by not eating his desert; he’d show you by not coming out of his room. He’d show you by not going out to play with the rest of the kids.  He was angry, serious, and rebellious.  You were laughing.  Maybe only on the inside but you were laughing.

Luther jumps from Psalm 2 which he is treating to Psalm 37 which mentions the Lord looking at how the wicked are plotting against Him and once more His response is laughter.  “’The wicked plotteth against the just [to shove evolution down his throat] and gnasheth upon him with his teeth [because he won’t let him murder babies and marry who he wants]. The Lord will laugh at him, for he seeth that his day is coming” (Psalm 37: 12-13, Ibid., 67-68).

Still bothered at God getting a good belly laugh at the evolutionist making Father Time, Mother Nature, and Lady Luck their gods, the abortionist’s war on the pre-born, and the gay activists’ war on marriage?  Well, as always Luther hears the Psalms about Jesus first.  So he says, “O what a power of faith is required in all these words! For who would have thought, while Christ was suffering and the Jews triumphing, that God was laughing at them all the while (Ibid. 68)!

If God can be pictured at laughing at His enemies on Good Friday, I can picture Him laughing as the evolutionists proudly produce another “fact” to prove their theory; the abortionists savagely assert their right over life in the womb, and the homosexual activists boldly promote their gaiety.  Hey, I can even laugh at myself for when God laughs all His people can too.
