I loath long titles, so I apologize, but the war has been joined and one if by land and two if by sea didn’t seem to apply. Our side (confessional, conservative Lutheranism) is electing to keep our powder dry. Their side (American, liberal Lutheranism) has come out shooting. I fear we’re really not keeping our powder dry; we’re just not shooting. Continue reading
You can Learn a lot from an Aristotle
Aristotle said it first, and I think this is what the Association of Confessing Evangelical Lutheran Churches with their Admonition is seeking to avoid. Continue reading
Drs. Laura and Meyer
Have you been party to the recent brouhaha over Dr. Laura’s repeated use of the “n” word during a broadcast? She was trying to show a caller that it really was just another word. She came out looking like a racist. Reverend Dr. Dale Meyer, president of Concordia Seminary, wishing to address postmodernism comes out looking like a postmodernist. Continue reading
You’ve Got to be kidding!
This falls under the topic: You’ve got to be kidding me! This information is taken from Acts Church Lakeway, Texas and is current as of August 2010. Acts Church is a mission of the Texas District of the LCMS. Here are your mission dollars at work. Continue reading
You Can Have the Church of My Grandfather
Till the end President Gerald Kieshnick was pilloried for his 2001 comment that the LCMS was no longer your grandfather’s church. He defended or perhaps clarified it in his 2010 report to the Synodical convention. President-elect Harrison and the Association of Confessing Evangelical Lutheran Churches also bang that drum slowly from the other side. They want to be the church of their grandfather’s. I don’t. And another thing…..
I’ve told most everyone I’ve ever married if in an argument with your spouse you find that you’ve begun a sentence with, “And another thing,” don’t finish it. It will always end badly. This may be a good time to take my own advice. Continue reading
More Views from the Outside
As promised, here is some information about another one of President-elect Harrison’s appointment. He has returned to the well of Lutheran World Relief to tap the Reverend Doctor Albert Collver as one of his three executive assistants. To be fair to both the appointer and the appointee you really should read the latter’s Logia article referenced below for yourself. I believe I give an accurate description of what I read, but I was in the throes of making a statement of confession, so I would be biased. Please remember three things. My church and I entered into a state of confession on June 20, 2005. There are only a handful of others who have done so (no more than .5% of LCMS congregations). And finally, in keeping with the melancholy if not melodramatic ending to my 2005 letter, the appointment of the good reverend and doctor doesn’t bode well for this handful. Good thing we are in not in the hands of men. Continue reading
My View from the Outside
A brother directed me to this endorsement of Rev. Matt Harrison after I had noted that one of Rev. Harrison’s first acts was to appoint a woman as one of his assistants. That woman was Barbara Below. Here is her endorsement of her then and now again boss. From my view from the outside it speaks volumes. Continue reading
When 1% is 100%
No math wizard I. No math would be more accurate, but riddle me this. When is 1% a 100%? When it matters the most.
The Necessity of Refuting the Gainsayer
Though I’ve always been suspicious of this analogy, I’ve used it. Bank tellers aren’t taught to recognize counterfeit money by handling hundreds of examples of funny money but by handling true money. Therefore, we shouldn’t spend a lot of time going over the errors of other Christians. We should focus on the truth. Continue reading
