Why the Fuss Over Modern Family and The New Normal?

So what’s the big deal about featuring a happy gay couple as part of a modern, normal family?  I’m not asking what’s the big deal with you but with me.

I watch neither of these shows, and I am still incensed by them.  So much so that I even went to great lengths to find out that the critically acclaimed and highly awarded Modern Family did not draw half the market share of The Middle: the unawarded, unacclaimed, normal family show that preceded it.

Why do I get so upset about homosexuality portrayed not just as normal but even as better?  You would think I hadn’t lived through Dallas in the 70s where greed was glorified.  You would think I hadn’t lived through the 80s where kids’ snappy, smart-alecky comebacks to parents and others in authorities were sit-coms bread and butter.  You would think I hadn’t lived through the 90s were premarital sex was worshipped on Seinfeld.  You would think I hadn’t lived through the “oughts” where the mob was portrayed as having family values on the Sopranos.

I’m not even sure gay marriage and gay parents are the nadir of our fallen country.  I only know that when Sodom and Gomorrah reached this point that’s when the fire and brimstone fell.  I only know that homosexuality is what Romans 1 says God gives people over to who suppress or exchange the truth for a lie.  I only know that if weak, obsequies, greedy, immoral, rebellious Lot’s soul was vexed by the lawlessness of his day (2 Peter 2:8) when it finally reached this depth, then so should mine.

About Paul Harris

Pastor Harris retired from congregational ministry after 40 years in office on 31 December 2023. He is now devoting himself to being a husband, father, and grandfather. He still thinks cenobitic monasticism is overrated and cave dwelling under.
