“Don’t be a hater” is a popular expression among those current in pop culture’s lingua franca.
In the 60s it was “Be a lover not a fighter.” That was taken from a 1964 song of the Kinks titled “I’m a lover not a fighter.” It’s interesting that 40 years later nothing positive is being said just the rejection of a negative. If, that is, hating is always negative. Since Scripture says there are things God hates, hating can’t always be negative. I hate hate laws are and if that’s not positive, I am, nevertheless, positive that I am right.
I suspicioned as much ever since the advent of them in the 80s. I believe a pastor in Canada and some in Europe have been prosecuted under them. Famed and infamous Nazi minister of propaganda, Joseph Goebbels, gave a reason for those ostensibly to be protected by them to hate the hate laws.
In 1943 a survey of London revealed that 26% of Londoners thought unfavorably of Jews after the Blitz. This was double the amount before it. In response there was talk in Parliament of a law forbidding anti-Semitism. Goebbels hearing of this confided to his diary. “’A law against hating Jews is usually the beginning of the end for the Jews’” (The Last Lion, III, 661). One would think Goebbels spoke whereof he knew.
No such law was passed in 1943 England. Such laws were passed there in 1986.
