Why do movie studios and NFL football have such majestic musical themes? Why don’t they have happy little ditties, something with rhythm and toe tapping swing? Continue reading
Something to Live
Perusing the church ads in the Austin American Statesman I noticed a Pentecostal church advertising, “We’ll give you something to live by.” People resonate to that. Continue reading
Dear Absinthe
My Dear Absinthe:
“Absinthe makes the heart grow fonder.” That’s a little chuckle we have down here in tribute to your work in the Smith case. Yes, you surely had his heart (and more!) growing fonder for his neighbor. Continue reading
Bart Simpson is Right
Bart Simpson cleared it all up for me. I’m not a regular watcher of the goggled-eyed little guy but I happened to catch a re-run of a Christmas episode. Dad, Homer, had only received 13 dollars for a part-time job he had taken to fund the family Christmas. Being far below what he had expected, he was in despair. A co-worker suggests that Homer go with him to the local dog track and parley that meager check into a real Christmas bonus. Bart tries to discourage Homer. Homer remonstrates. Bart says something like, “What the heck. TV has taught me that at Christmas time I should Continue reading
Maybe There Are Only 94 Theses
This being Reformation it’s time once more to haul out the 95 Theses. Here’s one I’ll bet you haven’t read: Number 7. It says, “God remits guilt to no one unless at the same time he humbles him in all things and makes him Continue reading
You Need Strongs Legs to Stand up Under Good Times
That’s a proverb Luther quotes. He says what is to be feared is not the trying, difficult, despairing times, but the good times. The Church has always believed this. From this sort of theology comes the oft quoted remark, “The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church.”
But being a pastor, a shepherd under Christ is tremendously difficult these days. Who in their right mind would really want to do this? Continue reading
An Answer to Pastor David Rohde’s “Why Stay?”
When I learned that a paper on why to stay in the LCMS was being given at a free conference in Brenham, Texas, I told one of my members he should go and hear it. He is contemplating going to seminary, and he needs to know what the best reasons for staying in the LCMS are.He went to the conference. When he came back he got a copy of the paper from its author. He asked me to read it. I replied that I would read it if he would go back through all the Convention Workbooks for the Texas District and the LCMS from 1984 to date to see how many resolutions were submitted from St. Paul, Wilson, Texas while Pastor Rohde was pastor there, 1984 – to the present. Give me those nice bright colors
Here is my latest attempt to view the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod in the best light possible. It comes from the realm of photography, digital photography to be precise.
Have you noticed how common freaky pictures of celebrities are? They are caught on camera with some of the most ghoulish looks imaginable. Go to Drudgereport.com and see how he habitually captures Hillary Clinton with an unflattering expression. Why is this? Continue reading
A Modest Proposal
Now that it looks as if there will be no special convention for the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod in 2009, I have a modest proposal. Continue reading
The Principle of Authority
Find out the principle of authority for a group and you’ve found out what is at the rock-bottom of their belief system. In truth, denominations tolerate a wide range of beliefs as long as what you believe doesn’t compromise their principle of authority. Continue reading
